MY 1997 4.2l v-6 locked up last month I just removed the plugs and was
able to get the truck to turn over. Do I need to replace the engine or just the head gaskets?
Of What I been reading for the past year, it sounds like your engine is gone. Usually when it starts knocking it's past gone.
Stupid Ford and they're "our '97 & '98 trucks have no problems with the head gaskets. It's just a coincedance that EVERY '97 & '98 truck has this problem. Tough luck. Please tell your family and friends that our vehicles are built Ford tough."
Yeh, I'm convinced the engine is shot I managed to get it to run, but its pretty ragged. Ford made me a pretty good deal on a rebuilt engine 3600.00 installed with a three year warrenty. The truck is in good shape I just worry about another ford v-6 engine having the same problem.
Joey (true4.2) is right, but I am considering getting a 4.6L v8 soon and does that truck have the same head gasket problems as ours?? because the one I'm looking at is a 97..

Blah!
They dont have head gasket problems; its the lower intake gaskets and timing cover gasket.
Well, check this out. This is the KBB price on the truck, though I don't know if I have all the specs right. I said it had 100,000 miles on it, loaded, 4WD, 4.6, and everything. Well, the link only works if you go in and manually re-do everything, but it was like 7,600.
Ok.. I am new to the site but I would like to ask a few questions of Stevenrenz1431 9or anyone who would know)
I have a 97 4.2L 5-speed man.
I had a my engine light flashing on and off a few days after I was getting a rough idle durring startup. I took it to my friend / mechanic and he told me I had coolent leaking into the heads. I have 116,000 miles on it. he told me to sell the truck soon.
Now my question is what did you do to get FORD to make the deal for the rebuilt w/ 3 year warrenty? Is there something I can do? should I talk to someone. I am guessing that your warrenty was expired when you worked your problem out with FORD.
Thanks Mike
