Ok, i'm about ready to stick the transfer case in my truck and I ran into a few problems. I have a C-6 tranny with a married transfer case that fits an M block. I got a C-6 in my truck that is behind a 302. I also have a NP 205 divorced case sitting around.
So what is gonna be eaiser or best to do? Take the trans apart and change output shafts so the t-case will fit in my truck. Or mounting the divorced case behind the tranny thats in it now? I'm new to all this 4x4 stuff, I just dont know which transfer case would be best to use.
Plus it's easier on your rear driveshaft angle, although you have a little steeper angle in the front but that generally doesn't take as much abuse. If you snap a U-joint on the tranny to t-case driveline with a divorced unit you're dead in the water. At least with a married case you'll still have one axle to limp home with.
I don't think you can get much better clearance than having your t-case up in your frame. That's why you can see the transfer cases on highboys, divorced tend to hang lower even if you rotate them a bit. Married sit a lot higher. Bottom of my case is even with the bottom of my frame. However, a divorced will give you a better driveshaft angle if you keep it hanging down a bit lower. (Think someone already mentioned that). If you raise it you lose the only real benefit to a divorced case.
Well, like I said, I'll take a married t-case over a divorced. But, you can clock a divorced to where they have as much if not more clearance as a married, but your not increasing your driveshaft angles. Simply raising it, defeats the advantage of a divorced, like Ivan said. I did this on my '73. I'd still rather have eliminated the extra u-joints and intermediate shaft, but divorced can be set up no cost you no extra clearance. This was starting to sound a little fuzzy so I thought I'd clarify.
Thats a good point I never thought to mention. All you have to do is weld a bracket onto your tranny cross member and you're good to go. Thats how I was running the C-6.
