Ok lets say you had an F250 highboy with the divorced transfre case and you needed to replace it. You also have problems finding a divorced one but plenty of married ones. Is there a C-6 married transfer case 4x4 tranny that bolts to an FE motor? Like from an F150 4x4 with an FE in it? Which transfer case would you get? I see lots of married Ford transfer cases at the local yard and the guys there ask if I want a 203 or 205. I don't know what to get as this is my first 4x4. I wish I could find a divorced one at the local yard but they ****** them for their "off road recovery" tow truck. It's a highboy with the tow boom on the back lifted with 35's and sounds awesome. Too bad it's not street legal. They tow the off road tow truck with a flatbed then take the 4x4 out to the stuck truck. You can imagine the recovery bill on that.
Atlas cases are for rock crawlers and only a good case if you plan to go SLOW with low horsepower. Some would say they're for wussies. I prefer the 205 as it's a part time case and it's all gear driven, no chain to stretch or break. It's smaller than the 203 and about 50 pounds lighter (still weighs a friggin ton though). ALL married 205's and 203's for Fords are identical. They bolt to an adapter that then bolts to the tranny. The adapters come in different lengths but that's your only real variable. The C6 has an adapter and the manual tranny has a little different adapter. What engine powers it makes no difference. If you go to a married unit you'll have to have both driveshafts rebuilt and make your own crossmembers and junk like that. What case do you have in there right now and what's wrong with it? Personally I'd much rather spend $150 on a rebuild kit, rebuild the case and pop it back in then spend all the time and money to go with a married unit. Also, married cases make things a lot more challenging if you go to a bigger lift down the road.
The stock transfer case was stolen after it was pulled. Now I just run a 2wd drive shaft. I want to get another divorced transfer case but the local yards look at me like I'm speaking Greek or something. I really don't want to fab crossmembers and have custom work done to the drive shafts. I will just keep looking and wishing I could go 4x4 again.
More money than I would spend on one and the guy is full of crap when he mentions $1000 put into it but here, check ebay auction 7992935169 and also auction 7993590464 though it's in NY and would cost a bundle to ship. They're on ebay all the time, just hard to find one that's local to you.
Hey, I have an extra divorced NP205 from a 73 F-250 that I planned to rebuild and set aside as a spare. It worked great and shifted easily. I'll sell it for $300 as it is (includes all yokes, mounting plates, speedo cable, even the linkage and shifter lever) OR I can clean it up inside and out, install new seals, make it twinstick capable and give it a fresh coat of paint for $200 more. [bearings are tight and have no play] I live 2 hours up from sandiego. Really dont want to ship it.
The case for sale is the one on the ground on the left, but I can make it pretty with new seals like the one on the right.
