hello.. I didnt now if this was the right forum to ask this.. if not i'm sorry. But i'm geting ready to buy a new turnkey Engine. 302 with 325 Hp. And it's coming with a Holley 670 CFM Truck Avenger Carb. Now I've heard nothing but bad things about Holleys.. I dont think i've ever talked to any one who has had any thing good to say about them. i've been told you all ways have to work on them tune them change things out rebuild them like every month.. And the only time i've heard they are any good is when there are on the strip or 4x4'ing.. is this true should I ask for a Edelbrock i've heard that Edelbrocks are better in every way then holleys.. i've never had a holley so I have no clue on what I should do. can any of you guys shed some light on this for me please. thank you all.. Oh it's going in a 79 F150 2 wheel drive. Thank you again
For a daily driver, a spreadbore Edelbrock would be the best of both worlds. You would have to use an adaptor with it, I don't think anybody makes spreadbore intakes for 302s.
Holley street avenger any day, I have had one on my corvair street buggy for years and it murders any edelcrap carb ever built, plus I havent had too touch the adjustments since I tuned it in about 3 or 4 years ago.
After years of running the el-cheapo Holley 1850, I tried both the 750 and 600 cfm Edelbrocks on my new 410FE and could never get both low-end and top-ends to dial in right. Then switched to 670 Holley TruckAvenger and had problems with two of them also, in spite of numerous conferences with the Holley techs.
Finally the Holley tech kind of admitted that the Truck Avengers had some quality control issues with extra check valves and stuff for the off-road performance, and offered to swap my 670 Truck Avenger for a 770 Street Avenger. Just like turning on a switch, the Street Avenger worked great! You may have to do a bit more tweaking to a Holley than Edel to get it to optimum tune level, but I'm convinced of their superiority, especially the newer ones which have power valve blow-back protection and readily adjustable secondary tip-in. I had to fatten up the acceleration pump shooter, changed to a Holley Adjust-A-Jet so I can easily change settings for various altitude extremes, and manual choke. But it works so much better than any of the others that I'd never go back. JMHO. Steve
does holly make a 600cfm? i have only seen 570 and 670cfm ones neither of which fits my appliatcion. ive heared nothing but bad about holleys, from what i hear the edelbrocks have a more accurate air/fuel mixture, are more relaibele and have more low and mid-range torque. also nomad how did you get 325 horses out of a 302? that would be awesome to drive.
i think edelbrock should pay lxman 1 and me for every time we recommend their carbs. The new holleys are better than the old but for mininum hassle go with the edelbrock.

The Holley Street Avenger carbs are pretty hard to beat. I've replaced all my other brand carbs with Street Avengers. On a stock 302, the 570 is the perfect size. They are for up to a 300hp engine. If you plan on a cam swap, better heads and free flowing exhaust, go with the 670cfm. I'm speaking from experience, not from what I've read or been told. The Edelbrock is a pretty good carb, and is formerly the type I used before switching to the Street Avenger. I get better gas mileage with the Street Avenger. The Edelbrock is not even made by Edelbrock. It's the EXACT same carb as a Carter AFB, which is made by Weber. I've owned all three "brands". If that is the route you choose, Summit sells a new 600 cfm Carter AFB for $200. If cost is a deciding factor, that's your best deal.
hi there. i had a holley 1850 model and had lots of problems with keeping the idle right, but the secondary "go" was pretty darn good. i just switched to an #1406 edelbrock and the idle is super smoooth now and the go is not quite as good as the holley but my truck isnt a race car so thats ok. had to get the tuning kit though cause it was very lean but now its pretty cool.
oh yeah, the edelbrock is super easy to tune without having to take the carb apart and replace gaskets etc.

i have a holley 4160 600cfm elec choke carb on my 302. I am pleased with its performance overall. It took some time to get it tuned, but it runs sweet now.
