gas tank wiring problem

I am puting a F-250 1987 rear gas tank in my 1979 F-250. I have done this before but I forgot how I done it. The 87 sending unit has 4 wire hook ups and the 79 only has 2. I wired the hot wire to the wire to the sending unit and the ground to the one that looked like it was the ground ( it had a stud but no wires leading off it). when I moved my flot the gage read backwards. does anyone have any ideal what I am doing wrong?

I'm pretty sure they changed the way they wired the system to monitor the fuel.

Yes someone in the know wrote in awhile back and said Ford switched the sending units and guages around somewhere in the late 80's.
