Need a bit of help. have a 78' F250. Rear tank, this weekend put just over 10 gallons of gas in the tank. Fuel gauge showed darn near empty. (Just bought this thing, so not sure how accurate fuel gauge is). 19 gallon tank, should be at least 1/2 full. Anyhow, needle only comes up just past empty. So I'm thinking likely a bad ground because when a switch to the aux. tank, the fuel gauge works.
So I pull the ground wire on the rear sending unit and touch to a good ground. Dial doesn't move except just above E. Hook this back up, and pull the other wire and ground that. Same thing. I don't ground the wire, turn the key, same thing. Needle comes up just a hair above E.
So, have I gone about this all right? What does all of this point towards? Bad wiring? Bad sending unit? Where should I go from here?
This is probably a really newbie/dumb question, but this is my first resto.
Float could be out of adjustment or has soaked up fuel over time. If its brass it may have filled partially with fuel. Or could just be a bad sending unit.
If you directly ground the wire that attaches to the sending unit that goes to the gauge, does the gauge go to full? If it does, its not the gauge or wiring......its the sending unit.
