My front hubs make a lot of popping noise when locked in and making sharp turns left or right. I have had it looked at twice but the tech says it's normal. I have always owned 4X4's and never had an old one make this much noise. Anyone else have noise? I live in Alaska and we use 4X4 a lot.
Yes. I just noticed a thumping in the frontend when making hard right or left turns. You say its in the hubs? Weird. My older Ford 4x4 did not do that. It doesn't sound healthy I will have to look into this. Not only can't I turn the steering wheel with the brake on but now I get thumping when turning right or left. Did you notice if you have to apply the brake when turning to get the noise?

No popping noise from my '99 SD SC 4WD v10, Dan. I live in Alaska, too, and also make extensive use of 4WD.
I got t-boned by a cow moose just north of Cantwell about 8 weeks ago. She came at me from the side, and I didn't see her or her two-year-old calf until it was too late to avoid her. She caved in the driver's door, then spun around and totally destroyed the rear fender. Even after $4,800 worth of damage, that truck was rattle-free, and everything worked (except the driver's door mirror - it was gone! These sure are great trucks.
My new 2000 F-350 SD CC with V10 4x4 makes the same popping noise on full left and right turns with the hubs locked. When the hubs are in auto mode the noise is not present. The manual on the truck recommends running the hubs in the auto configuration. The vehicle also has the shift-on-the-fly option.
I have no problem with hubs -manual hub lever on floor v-10 5 speed other than cant make sharp turns in 4wd because of axle shafts binding but this is a common problem on all silod axle and ttb vehicles
