Okay, I'm not sure if it is just with the 4.6L or all engines with the E4OD tranny, but I need to know if something is wrong or if all is normal. If I put the pedal to the metal, my transmission has to rev up to 4500 RPM's to get to third gear. It gets really annoying and I hate that emptyness sound when an engine revs up that much. I've heard somewhere that only the 4.6L has a funky gear change, but I'm not sure if it is true. Also, not only is it annoying the crap out of me, it's eating my gas by revving up that high. Does anybody know what I can do to make it stop? Is there something I can tune it with or something I could change out in my tranny? Any thoughts would be appreciated. By the way i have 113k miles if that may have anything to do with it. Thanks~
LxMan1, does it not annoy the heck out of you to hear that engine roaring at 5000 rpms?? I don't know if Flowmaster pipes might make it more noticeable, but when my engine is pushing 4500rpm there is a sound that make my engine sound dry. It's hard to explain, but what I'm trying to say is that I wish that it could change a little sooner so that I could beat my friend's Tacoma from a stoplight, but just cant because of that daggum 3rd gear.~
I believe that you can adjust the shift speed with a Microchips Supertuner.
My engine pulls good to 5000rpm. It doesn't bother me, I shift my Mustang at 6000rpm. Nothing beats the sound of a screaming American V8!!
If your truck isn't pulling to 5000rpm, it may have other issues such as a dirty fuel filter, air filter, worn plugs, etc.
DRP, You may want to take your truck to a transmission shop. About mid January I noticed the same thing, but mine was a bit more pronounced. When I accellerated from a dead stop, my 00 F150 4.6 seemed to rev a lot higher to get going, but once it was rolling, had no problems. I took it into a shop for a "diagnostic" test and they pulled no computer codes off of OBDII and their test drove confirmed what I was saying. I thought it was the torque converter from reading forums on this forum. They told me they couldn't tell what was wrong with it unless they took it apart. So I thought I could live with it a bit until it got really bad then I would get the TC fixed. Just my luck the next day I was driving and it sounded like I had a handful of gravel dumped in my tranny. Only in reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. I took it in immediately to the shop and told them what was happening and that I needed it fixed. Needless to say, when the shop called me I almost fell to the floor: stripped planetary gears, stripped sun gear, bad torque converter, new u-joints. This was a used truck with 67,000 miles on it and I have babied it since I have gotten it. My only complaint so far.
