Test Drives

I went to a saturn dealership to test a used car today. I saw a green 1995 with 134xxx miles on it, and it was a 5spd. I took it out for a test drive, and asked the sales lady if I could open it up. She said go ahead, so I brought it up to 5500, and shifted to 2nd and did the same thing. Then it started to make a funny noise. It almost sounded like a belt was going out. So, I wonder if they can charge me for a repair even though the sales person said it was ok to open it up, and I was just test driving the car.

I'm lookin for something cheap, and saturns are pretty cheap. And second, I wanted to see what she could do, its a little 4 cylinder DOHC, and it wasn't even red-lining it.

Charge you for the repair? I suppose they COULD, but it's very, VERY unlikely. The salesperson gave you permission to "open it up." Hey, look at it this way: you "helped" them find a defect before the next owner did, and then they would have had to fix it anyway, and give the person a loaner, and beg them for a "10" on the survey-

wait a minute- you've actually SAVED them money! I think YOU should charge THEM! Case closed.

Thanks guys, that makes me feel better. I just kinda felt bad when it happened, cause I don't think I'm gonna get the car. It didn't feel right, the clutch was funny, the shifter was loose, and just didn't "feel" right.

The way I see it, you test drive a car to see if it will take what you are going to throw at it. If you are going to run it hard, test drive it hard.
