Classic Mustang Project

Since I was a kid I have always wanted a classic Mustang convertible, thinking a '65 or '66. I would like to look for a project car, put a 351 in it, up the horsepower and all that quite a bit and cruise. Whats the best way to find a car that doesn't have too much body cancer? I am not too concerned about an engine or tranny since I will most likely change all that out myself. Any tips, hints and advice from you guys who have done this before would be very helpful. Thanks!

I don't know how much money you want to spend but, I know you will be paying more if you buy a project car than if you just bought one at a swap meet that is already doen.

Yeah I kinda figured that would be the case, but part of the appeal is doing the work myself, you know, something that I did. Additionally, the cost of the project would be spread out over a year or so as opposed to all at once.

The best way is to look at auto traders on the internet & plan a week end trip to a souther state to look at cars.

Or take a vacation & go to California or Florida. Plenty of rust free cars down there. unfortunatly you may end up paying a couple thousand just for a good car in restorable shape.

Everyone has different standards on how a restoration has to been done. A buddy of mine likes to do the engine, body & interior and calls it complete. I prefer to get deeper & check the under carriage, clean, paint & replace parts down there also.

Depending on your definition of a restoration you could be spending anything from $5000.00 to $30,000.00 before it is complete.

Autotrader is a good way to go - defintely better than ebay. You gotta hunt for a good starter car, there simply no other way around it. Shop around and dont take the first one u find. -BBB
