The FE446 is toast :-(
I think the previous pump shaft failure has resulted in some real damage. She rocks an rolls, shakes, stutters and smokes on the passenger side now. In general, she runs like crap.
It was running good a week ago when I took it to get the locker installed. I tightened one rocker arm ever so slightly since then, that's all I 've done aside from mounting the AC compressor.
A $10,000 motor screwed for a $17 pump shaft. I'm about to give up and start a new hobby. I might sell the whole mess :-(
I finally got the suspension, brakes, steering rear diff locked, AC etc etc, now I have to pull the motor again.
OK, I've vented enough.
Maybe just take a break from the whole mess. I'm in the same boat you are - just on a much, much smaller scale. I am overwhelmed with the cost of components and that fact that my truck is in more pieces than I can count. It helped me to take a week or so and just leave the truck alone.
That - or just rip that baddie apart, check everything, and toss it back together. 2 weekends worth of work and you'll know the problem.

I can't begin to offer any explanation. What sort of oil starvation damage would cause these symtoms? Maybe I missed the post, but did you find bearing damage when you had the oil pan off?
I loaned my project truck to my sister a few years back. She ran it out of oil. Said it started rattling and making noise, so she drove it home immediately, from the other side of Phoenix, I might add. I put oil in it and it ran for 3 more years before I tore it down. My point is that the event you described, hearing the lifters go flat and immediately shutting down, shouldn't have created the problem you describe.
Something doesn't make sense.

I completely drained the gas tank to upgrade the fitting to a number 10. So not to blow myself up, I filled the tank with water to drill and tap the fitting. I may not have done a very good job getting all of the water out. But then again, it ran OK last Fri. and Sat.
What are the first diagnostic checks I should do to determine the problem?
Im sorry to hear that the motor has a case of the craps!!
But like Scouder said it was running great before you took it down for the rearend work!! So 2+2 aint makin 4 here?
Its either something simple? Or someone Really tried out the rearend before you got there?
I certainly hope you find its nothing major!!!
Good Luck!! Russ!!
It only smokes on the passenger side?
How much, what color?
Does it clean up with RPM?
Is it missing?
Do any of the spark plugs show abnormal deposits?
Pull your dipstick or a valve cover, any deposits, grey pudding?
Pull a float bowl catching the fuel in a clean container, any water?
Lets start with these and go from there.

I'm out for awhile and this is NOT what I wanted to see when I came back. What brand pushrods are those and how much did you tighten them? I know you are very carefull so it wasn't a matter of simple over tightening. With that damage you've also got to pull the cam to see if the lobes are wiped. At least. I would. Greg, you have got the WORST luck. I recomend taking a break, knocking back some Scotch and Cubans, and then tear into her. Man, I'm sorry to see all this!
I would check the rockers and shaft(s) to see that they move freely and not bound up. It looks like the valves are ok, so I am guessing the oil starvation froze the rockers to the shaft, thus breaking the pushrods.
Unfortunately, the last person to adjust all of the valve train was not me :-( remember that valve float fiasco. I was having the carb dyno tuned and decided to let them replace the springs, since I was tire of wrenching. If you gus think they went too far, let me know so I can go back and at least apply some guilt. I was not too impressed with their service or the way they left my truck anyway. But, I was hoping they at least did good work when it counted.
SO, what do the rest of you think about this dry rocker scenario?
I'm pulling the head just to have a look at the cylinders and the underside of the valves. I'll post some pics for your opinions.
I need a new hobby. But first, a few cold beers. maybe beer is my new hobby :-) Especially since the wife told me to give up my other hobby, supporting the deprived local dancing girls.
Oh well, at least it's not my daily driver.
BTW, the rocker shaft studs look fine, I think that's just some flash photography illusions.

I think the problems happened when the pump quit and it just got worse recently.
I updated the page with more pics. the number 1 cylinder is scratched, probably beyond recovery, although the block is just .020 over.
