My 86 f150 has a 4.9 inline 6 with a 1bbl Carter/Weber feedback carburetor. It runs pretty good but gets poor gas mileage. I am looking at swapping the 1bb for a 2bbl, can anyone recommend a good one?
Any feedback carb such as Motorcraft or...would work, but remember that you'll have to find a manifold to go with it. I don't think Ford made a manifold for this engine and a 2v, but may be wrong. In the old days the parts houses sold convertors that would allow a 2v on a 1v manifold, but they seemed to defeat the whole purpose of going to a 2v.
Maybe you have a better idea. My truck runs pretty well, but it just doesnt seem to have a lot of pulling power. when I pull my boat, it really struggles going up small hills. I can have the pedal to the floor and it still slows down.
I gave it a tune up, new plugs, wires, dist. cap, rotor, O2 sensor, Map Sensor, Pip, and ignition module. I had a new Catalytic converter put on with a higher capacity muffler. It runs better, but still seems to lack power.
It just seems like the engine is capable of more then what im getting out of it. Everyone i know has told me that the 4.9 inline six is a strong motor, im just not seeing it. I"ve considered going to a two bbl carburetor, or just switching to fuel injection. Any recommendations?
It will run more reliably, have more power, and 9 times out of 10, lower emissions. My F-250 failed miserably with a 351w and feedback carb, even after parts replacements and rebuilding the carb. When I dropped in the 300-6, I used a Holley 2BBL that tended to run rich, and dual exhaust with no cats, and it passed with flying colors. There were a lot of problems with the CCC's and the variable venturi carbs, they were a great idea, but we all would have been better off with just EFI, or even keeping regular carbs.
