AOD Shifting

I just bought a '98 reg. cab shortbed 4X4 w/5.4 and when I shift from park/neutral to drive there is a hesitation before it goes into gear. Any ideas where I should start looking? Thanks!

I've been driving Ford trucks for 25 years but never had one that goes into gear 5 seconds after I put it in drive.

Have you changed the oil and filter in your transmission?
Fluid level is ok?

Fluid level ok and not discolored, going to change fluid and filter this weekend
