460 oil pump shaft

While putting the distibuter back in pushed the oil pump shaft down. The bushing pushing passed the block. Do I have to drop the pan to put the shaft in place?

Bushing? Did the shaft fall into the pan or is it still in the pump? Could you get ahold of it with a pair of pliers or good magnet and pull it back up thru? Or is it down too far? You shouldn't be able to "push" the shaft down into and thru the pump. When fully engaged the top of the shaft will sit below the block because the dist sits down in the block.

The oil pump drive shaft is installed same time as the oil pump. The shaft has a "ring" on one end, and that end goes toward the distributor. The idea is when you pull the dist. the suction can pull the shaft out with it, if the retaining clip of the shaft is not up the shaft will come up and could go back down into the pan.

If I am correct it sounds like the shaft came out with the dist.

"If" that is the case I would not go through the work of pulling of the pan and pump to install the shaft correctly. JUST remember if you ever have the pull the dist. watch the pump shaft.

Usually working on Ford's it's not a bad idea to be carefull anyway, you never know what some one else has done before.
