I had similar problem with mine years ago....looked hi and low...pulled light switch....rheostat spring was belly up...it controls brightness of dash lights...Replace the switch, all should be fine

Sounds like the engine to chassis ground wire check and clean and tighten should fix the problem.

Usually when the lights flash on and off it is the headlight switch. There is a circuit breaker in the switch that resets so you have some light to stop safely. Check ground as PRO said(always a good idea), then replace your headlight switch.

When you pull the switch look carefully at the wiring harness and at the switch terminals. You are looking for blackened terminals or connectors. Clean everything up and use some bulb grease to make sure the harness plugs into the new switch. I tie it there with a plastic wire tie. Cheap insurance! To remove the switch! Disconnect the negative terminal at the battery! Press the tiny silver, spring loaded button on top of the switch and pull out the **** and shaft. Then remove the bezel and drop the switch and harness down below the dash togeather. It will be easier to seperate these when you can get at them. Reinstall is reverse of removal. If this doesn't solve the problem look for a short in the light circuit. By the way, have you installed halogen bulbs? Sometimes these bulbs are simply to much amperage draw for these old switches. Relays solve this problem nicely. Have a look at the tech article here called "Brighter Brights and Whiter Whites".

The headlight switch has a circuit breaker in it so you don't lose your lights all together. It is either overloaded or going bad. If you still have stock lights, I recommend you replace the switch. I also suggest the tech article suggested above. It works wonders.
