So i finally took the trip and drove down to south carolina with my dad about a week and a half ago to pick up my 66 and not only did I find a really clean and great looking pickup but I got it back up here to minnesota and started driving it and holy crap this thing drives and rides unbelievably smooth I mean the steering is really tight and the thing honest to the big man rides way i mean way smoother than my 95 f150 does. It rides really good if it werent for the major thirst of this beast I would probably drive it everywhere were the all this nice to drive or did somone increase the drivability of this thing a great deal? as of right now I am extreamly impressed with my find.
I managed to get the Ol' Blue 65 runnng for a trip around the neighborhood this week end. I think the trucks ride nice myself, other than the stong arm steering and the long throw 4-speed, when she gets up to cruising speed, it's nice and smooooooth.
Power steering and power brakes (100% Ford parts), really add to the experience. These trucks are as good as it gets! If you the cost of a new one with the cost of an old one, the extra gas is not that big of a deal. IMHO!
yeah those old trucks ride nice and smooth compared to some newer trucks, maybe its the soft springs. ive got a twin i beam on my truck and its a prettey nice ride but i need some new shocks. swampo, what kind of motor do you have in your truck?
Hey 55cub
Where do you have to go? I found mine in Abbeville South Carolina. Its a pretty long drive take a buddy so you can switch off drivin I took the best buddy I got my old man "Helped that he had a 03 crew cab too hehe, It pulled really well" we made the 2400 mile round trip in about 34 hours. But we stoped at night and slep "best thing you can do, you would hated to get your pulling truck and your new slick banged up all at one shot just cause you didnt want to rest." It was a reallly good trip tho If you have to go that general direction I could give ya the roads we took.

I got a 352 In my truck Its got a little cam and stuff in it nothing major. The stock manafold and a holley 500 cfm carb bolted to it. Im gonna try and find a edl performer on ebay sometime and get like a 625 road demon carb and mabe a DUI distributor but these are thing that have to wait till I get alittle green. The Body on mine is exceptional. It amazes me that you can find trucks like that on the road down there. The area that I am from in MN most anything older than say 15 years has long since developed terminal rust cancer and pretty much kicked the bucket.
The real shame "down here" is that many rust free trucks go to the crusher. Many of the smaller yards keep these trucks around for years but the big guys don't let anything set more than a month or two and away they go.
I spent my first 45 years in Mn so I know all about the rust. Moved to AZ back in 99 and love it here. There are sooo many rust-free old vehicles on the road down here. Whens the last time you saw a Gremlin, Mavrick Grabber, Valiant or a Dart going down the road?
I got a 65 CC back in Jan and am having a blast working on this truck. First off, it has NO RUST, none, ever! Can't believe it. It's got a 352 with a C6 and Edelbrock 4 bbl, (with air of course). I did a total tune up including Petronix ignition and new carb. MPG is up to 12-13 now, started at 8.
You're correct that these things ride smooth, I couldn't believe it. Must have been a real winner in its day compared with what the competition had to offer.
I seem to recall watching a commercial as a kid that demonstrated the smoothness of the ride by driving the truck over a series of railroad ties with a broomstick mounted perpendicularly to the body, and passing between 2 rows of light bulbs mounted on a fence. The competion (chevy) of course, broke all the light bulbs while the Ford broke none.
