Stereo removal

What do you use to remove the stock stereo? There are 4 holes in the corners, do I use these holes for removal?

Yes, I have a tool for it, however it can be done with 4nails that fit. Push them in untill you feel pressure and then approx another 1/8 in. push them in an outward direction to the outside of the radio and pull the radio out.

There is a special tool you can pick up at Autozone for a few bucks. Its two U shaped thick wires. You put them in the holes and pop out the stereo. You can rig up your own with a coat hanger, but it will be a little harder, if you think you might do this more than once, go get the tool.

Thanks for the replies. I tried removing it with some nails and it didn't work. Do you need to press all 4 in at the same time? I may have pushed them in too far. I hope I didn't damage it so it won't work with the proper tool. We have no Autozone here in Hawaii. I will call Napa and Checker and see if the sell the stereo removal tool there.

I have also seen the tool at walmart. Any reputable radio shop will also have them.

Here's what one will look like.

The tool is $4 or less. Don't try using nails or screw drivers. Did that once and messed up the braket holding it in. Had to slip a piece of sheet steel between the radio and dash and bash at the bracket until the clips broke off to get it out.

Got the tool and got the factory stereo out and put in new deck. Installed an amp and 4 new speakers.

WOW big difference!

I know the job is already done, but I took out my deck last week using a coat hanger.

I cut 4 pieces about 4" long or so. Put them in each of the holes and gently pushed the pieces away from the deck (towards each door). You'll hear the clips unlatch and you can then just pull the deck out.

I find that the tool works the best, but if you don't have it, use an old coat hanger. Took me about 10 mins to get it out.

Taking out the molded dash piece is a big part to getting the stock unit out. I have the DIM clips, but it wasn't 'til I read that the molding had to be removed that I was able to remove the unit.

These links might help

I know this comes too late, but maybe these links will help others down the line. I ran across these excellent articles on radio replacmenet on anther site. The links are to a site called installdr.com.

http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/FLM/PDF/356033.pdf

Other posts have also mentioned good support from Crutchfield. I used their instructions to do my first radio installation last summer and it went off without a hitch. Great documentation and telephone tech support. You pay a little more for the equipment to get the support, but for a first-timer, the security was worth it.
