I think Im gonna set this up on payday, 35 a month, plus taxes ETC my bill would be about $41 a month I think, plus the new number portability law means we keep our home telephone number, it hooks up to your cable/dsl modem as a digital converter that then attaches to your phone.....and you make phone calls with your internet connection, and still maintain ability to browse at the same time, although im sure internet would be slower while you were on the telephone.
unlimited long distance, caller id, and all that other stuff is included FREE!
the converter box is portable, so if you travel, you just take the box with you and plug it into your broadband connection at hotel room, and voila, your home phone is traveling with you, you could make and receive calls from there with your home telephone number.
they also offer any are a code type deals where you could live in LA and have a NYC area code, and they offer 800 numbers for 5 a month
any input, check it out, im very interested in doing this
I've been using Vonage for close to a year now, and I love it. I got tired of all BS from the local phone carrier, and found that the price per month was about half of what I was paying.
About the only problem I've had is a choppy sounding call if I'm trying to upload something to the internet. But this is so seldom that it hasn't been a real problem. That, and it doesn't seem to effect the person on the other side of the line.
The only problem that you might have is if your internet connection is over DSL. All the DSL companies I've looked at require you to also have a land line through them, so switching to Vonage just ends up costing you more for a second line.
One other thing, the price I think you were looking at is the one for a small business. The price for un-limited local and long distance for the home is 24.99 or 14.99 for 500 minutes of local and long distance.
If you're interested, send me a PM and through the Vonage Refer-a-friend program I should be able to gut you a free month.
I hate the commercials also. That's why I will never get their service. I would rather stick with a tried and true phone company than mess with an internet phone service. I have phone service that offers local and unlimited long distance for one flat rate and like I said, the service is reliable.
i was interested does the sound quality differ is it a delayed sound and can you only have 1 phone in your house hooked up to the modem they give you.
The sound quality is as good or better (it's digital). There has been no delay that anyone I've talked to or myself has noticed. I currntly have two phones hooked up to mine, all you need is a $3 spliter that you can get from about anywere. Another option is the cordless phones that can be expanded. The last option is to disconnect the line from the phone box and just using the looped wires in the house. Once past the modem it's a standard two pair wire.
I've been thinking about getting one of the expandable systems myself, and I've found that they can be expanded from upto four to ten phones depending on the price you're willing to spend. About the cheepest I've found was about $80 for two phones that can handle upto four with additional phones being about $30 each.
