ive got a 1980 F-100 custom step side want it to sound better. I was considering a header no cats and flowmaster 50 then try to keep the 2-1/4 pipe ive got i was wondering if the exit makes sound diffrence. like in front of the wheel or behind the wheel. or run duels. please help im lost.
A header should increase the power. Like Saurian stated, it will probably be louder if you dump before the rear tire. The straighter the exhaust piping, the more sound reaches the end. Personally, I would still dump behind the tire. When the exhaust dumps closer to the cab, it has a tendency to be drawn into the bed 'bubble' of air, which if you run with youre rear window open, can become dangerous. I think dual pipes out the back sound good.
Before running exhaust out infront of rear tire check local law some states do not allow an aftermarket exhaust system to exit in front of the rear tire, or so i was told by the muffler shop my friend had a gibson cat back on his 6 that was sorta quiet but great sound it ran two tail pipes out in the stock location behind the rear tire looked good, i also am looking for an exhaust for my 300 but i think i want to go louder than the gibson system. Man i really wish you could just hear all sorts of exhausts and then choose one
Have you checked out any of the clips over at http://www.exhaustsoundclips.com/ford.html I know they have some straight six clips. Thats the only significant database of exhaust clips I know of.
