I'm fixing to paint the wiper arms and the vent cowling on my Aerostar, and of course the first thing to do is remove the wiper arms. I lifted the little latch on the wiper arms, but they're not coming off no matter how hard I pull the latch. What am I doing wrong here?
If I remember correctly. You lift the wiper up off of the glass. While it is up there is a little metal catch near the base of the arm. Pull out on the catch. Once it is out the arm will lift off of the post. Give it a try.
Well, I tried it, same result. I pulled the little latch near the base, and the thing just won't come off. Both of them did this. So now I'm at a loss. Do I need to use a tool or pull really hard at these things?
OK. I've got two aerostars. A 94 and a 96. I just went out and removed one off of each with my bare hands. Here is how I did it.
Lift the wiper arm all the way up and hold it. While it is up I pulled out on the little tab at the base. Hold the tab out and let the arm back down. It will stop just before it touches the glass. Then just wiggle the arm and lift at the base. It come right off.
This should work.
What year is yours? I think there are some (97 maybe) that has the washers built into the waper arms. I have not tried any of these. Is that what you have?
Okay. I was able to remove the wiper on the passenger side, but the arm on the driver's side refuses to work with me. It was definitely an easy job taking the other one off, but now there's this one last matter.
What I couldn't see in the dark last night was that the part of the wiper arm that's supposed to catch on that latch was bent out enough to the point where the latch goes right past but doesn't stop movement of the arm. So I got some pliers, wrenched the metal back into position, and it worked.
The wiper arm still didn't wanna come off, which after using some good 'ol Liquid Wrench, it finally popped off, showing me all the dirt and grime that was holding it on there in the first place.
Whew! I'm glad to have that done. Thanks to everyone who gave me pointers on this, I was really in a jam!
