02, f-150 with tow package and 4R70W trans. does anyone know which cooler line is the return line? it appears it is hooked in series with the in-radiator cooler. Seems it comes out of the transmission to the oil cooler in front of the radiator then into the radiator cooler . anyone have an oil flow diagram? TIA SC
Let the vehicle set overnight. The next morning start the truck up and raise the hood. The steel line gets hot first is coming from the transmission. You will then know what the flow is. Be carful of the fan.
There is no front or back on this trans, both lines are even, one fitting on top and one directly underneath.
Have I got an oddball trans?
One line goes into the cooler in front of the radiator, then comes out of the cooler and to the cooler inside the radiator then out of the radiator and back to the trans. Now my take on it would be that for winter use they would be running it thru the radiator first to warm it up then to the cooler in front of the radiator. Don't know just don't want a big mess removing the wrong line. thanks for any information. P.S.Running it and feeling the lines will not be a true test as the fluid is being warmed by the radiator.
O-top fitting in trans
O-bottom fitting in trans

That's why you let it set overnight before doing the test so that all the water in the radiator is cold and you can feel a definite difference in the temperature of the lines. This is not rocket science.
davee, it must be rocket science as i had the truck running for 20 min Thurs morning cold and both pipes were still so cold i could hardly hang on lol, not a true test IMHO.
Sled351, Thanks for the link to the TCI site as that clears this whole thing up. SC
Skywagon- Guess I neglected to tell you that you need to put it in drive and set the parking brake to heat things up. The flow can only go two ways. One of the problems is that if you ask in here, you will always get two answers. Your best bet is to figure it out for yourself if at all possible.
Looking at your radiator fom the front of the truck . The top line is coming from the tranmission to the radiator and the bottom line is going to the tranmission. Easy
