I need help to figure out what could be wrong with my vehicle. Last week the starter went out and I had that replaced. Van was running just fine. No weird noises. This morning on the way to work, I drove down the street, stopped at stop sign, started to accelerate and I noticed the vehicle bogged down and wanted to kill. I thought it was kind of strange, but then it was fine until I stopped at the next stop sign. It stayed running while I was stopped, but as soon as I started to accelerate, the vehicle quit running and wouldn't restart. I left it there, walked home, and a few hours later, my boyfriend went up there to try and get it home so he could look at it. He said that he got it started, but that he had to almost keep it floor to get home because it kept "bucking" as if gas wasn't getting to somewhere. There was no prior warnings as to any problems. My boyfriend's cousin said that it might be the fuel injectors, but I don't want to replace those if I don't have to because they are expensive. What could it be and how can I check to find out which one is really the culprit?
See if the computer thinks there is anything wrong!
That's where I'd start. It's a fairly simlpe test once you have the instructions and few things required to do it. If you want to spend $25, you can probably go to your local automotive store and get a code reader. But I just use the poor-mans method personally. Hasn't failed me yet!
After thinking some more...when was your air filter last changed? If it is plugged really bad that might be part your problem.
Idles fine, but doesn't want to run after pressing on the gas peddal? How about something as simple as the TPS(throttle positioning sensor). Ford Trucks has an article for testing this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/code124.php
Your MAF sensor could be dirt too. I use to have a '93 Thunderbird and read around TCCOA's website alot (www.tccoa.com). They have a very good article about cleaning the MAF sensor: http://www.tccoa.com/articles/intake/mafclean.html
One difference: I think the Aerostars (atleast on my '91 4.0L) use regular screwes to hold the MAF sensor in. I haven't taken mine apart yet so I'm not sure. Could be different since you have a 3.0L too.
I agree with copper...if it hasn't been changed before, that should definatly be the frist thing you try! It's a fairly easy 10-15 minute job. Fuel filters only cost about $7-$10 probably.
It's amazing how much those little fuel pumps can pump...I saw a fuel filter on a Taurus that was so plugged you couldn't blow through it. But the car still ran!
