Another thing the code readers can do is erase all the the error codes. If you had an intermittent problem then the code could cause the tranny to shift other than normal. I had a code 628 which is a torque converter problem. The shop said the computer detects engine speed and rear end speed and determines that there is too much slip. Bad torque converter. When this error occurs the computer goes into a default mode that makes it shift hard. Like popping the clutch in a manual. If I erase the codes then it shifts ok but the code comes back in a few miles and it slams the gears again. 203,000 miles on it.
The Ford service rep I talked to stated the codes indicated a slipping transmission. I took the truck out for a drive and yes it was slipping. When the cruise control was, on the RPM changed with minor variations in road grade. Bottom line is the tranny is worn out at 153,000 miles. A performance transmission shop in Houston, Texas is now installing a re-manufactured "extra" heavy duty E4OD with all the latest Ford TSB modifications included.
There are no hard shifts after it blinks. My thoughts are that is is just slipping under the torque. Other then that, it runs great. I just got a electronic shift kit (to vary the line pressure) for it, so I will hook it up this weekend. I think that between the shift kit and putting it in 4 high or low without the hubs locked, I should be ok. Hopefully ......... I can see it picking up the slip like fordberg says since my rear wheels are bairly moving, but my rpm's are higher, do to the pulling action. Thanks for all the help and tips.
I have a 93 7.3L IDI and my OD light flashes after it shifts into what feels like 3rd. Then shifts real hard all the time. Sometimes it won't do it at all for a week, then every single day once I hit 3rd. It doesn't slip at all either. I just don't have the money to get ford to scan the tranny computer.
