I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 w/ 4.0 EFI and the automatic 5-speed transmission. Recently I was going down the interstate in overdrive and it downshifted to fourth and my overdrive light started flashing. When I pressed the OD button, it shifted me down to third; I pressed it again and went back into fourth. I pulled over and stopped, but noticed while I was slowing down, as it was downshifting, it was shifting really hard. When I got it stopped, I turned off the truck and started it and the light stopped flashing and it drove normally. I have been driving for a couple of days now and this has not happened again. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be worried about this or could this just be a fluke thing that happened?
My O/D Light was flashing on my 99 xlt so I took it to the dealer. Luckily I had purchsed the extended warrenty. The problem was a flow control valve that had gone bad. The tranny wouldn't downshift at all. Hope this helps
Last year, my 02 o/d light started flashing about 4 blocks after I pressed it. My symptoms were HARD upshifting, AND lazy upshifting. It didn't shift normally, or something between hard and lazy. Also, when I shut the truck off, then turned it back on again, the problem went away for a while. I ended up going to a dealer a half hour away (major inconvenience) who would give me a loaner car (major life saver).
There's a link on here somewhere to look at some TSB's, and Warranty recalls.
