Flashing overdrive light on E40D

I got a question for everyone. I have a 93 F250 with a E40D and a 7.3 IDI. Sometimes, when I am at low speed, but higher RPM (using some torque) the od light, the "off" light, on my shifter starts to flash. If I turn the truck off and turn it back on, the light doesn't flash anymore. Like I said, it will happen when I have the it in 1st and pulling something, or in reverse, like when I had my camper on and was backing up onto some blocks to level it out. The guys at the Ford shop did not know what was causing it. Can anybody help me? Thanks.

all i know is when the od light flashes, take it to have the computer scan the tranny for trouble codes.

If it flashes, it is either throwing out codes or it may have a short. Mine worked fine for a while then blacked out completely and od never worked. After about 6-7 months the light came back on and od started working again. Then it started blinking real fast continuously and finally stopped altogether once again. I think mine shorted out because od still works.

Thanks for the help. I was wondering if it was sending a code, but I have not taken it in to the dealer to have them check it (maybe next pay chack). I just figured that it was slipping since it only happens when I am torquing it pretty good. The od works no prob and I always turn it off when I am going to do some heavy pulling or crawling. I guess it is a quirk to my truck. Thanks for the help.

For your '93 you can buy a code reader for about $25. Most auto parts stores have them. I've even seen them at K-Mart and Wal-Mart.

Yeah but the $24.99 code reader at Wal-mart DOESN'T READ the tranny. Same for the one at K-Mart.

Take it to a transmission shop. They'll have the specific readers to make a determination.

Those cheap code readers DO read transmission codes. Mine did find the TCC error code on a 1994 (non-OBD II).

Is there a brand name for those code readers, or do I just ask for a code reader for the tranny? Next time I am in a city, I will go to Walmart and check it out. I didn't know something like that even existed. Thanks.

It will for a '93. Those are EEC-IV and the cheapest reader works on those. Also, the transmission computer is the only one on the truck!

I have a 96 f350 cc with a 7.3 and A4OD, around 125,000 miles it started the flashing thing, so I pulled the trans pan changed the filter and cleaned inside control box real well, I was going to drop all of the trans oil but only replaced what was in the trans and when I drove it the flashing stopped and I now have about 145M on it and am doing a total trans fluid change just because, so you might try changing the trans filter if it has been in there a while.

I did just that the other day hoping the same thing, but I haven't taken the rig out to do some pulling with it yet. I will have to find someone that needs help getting wood so I can see if the oil and filter change worked. For sure next time I am in somewhere that has a K-Mart or Walmart I will look up those code readers. They sound like a great tool to have.

I have a 92 F250 7.3 that was having a similar problem. The o/d off light would flash at lower speeds but once I accelerated it would stop. I paid a shop to check it out, there answer was a new transmission. It turned out to be the tachometer sensor which is located on the oil filler housing in front of the injector pump. The sensor is about $45.00 at the dealership. Maybe this will help you, GOOD LUCK.

My 95 F250 with E4OD has just started flashing the overdrive off light. I had the dealership check out the problem, but all they did was drop the pan and take a look which did not solve the problem. I have quickly read the owners manual and the Ford shop manuals. What I have read so far leads me to believe there is a sensor problem (possibly the pressure sensor) that can be read with a code reader. The truck is back at the dealership with instructions to find the problem and fix it. I will post another reply when the problem is corrected.
