I am considering installing a set of headers (probably Borla) to my 99 SD, V10, CC, 4X4, AT. I was told by a mechanic at a reputable shop that it would require pulling the engine. If this is true, I won't do it.
Does anyone have experience with this install? Did you have to yank the motor? Was it a problematic install or did it go smoothly? Lastly, was it worth it?
I haven't done an install on my V-10 but I have on other vehicles with more cramped engine compartments. It is not unusual to to have to unbolt motor mounts and some accessory connections (some hoses, linkages, starter motor) to do the job. Complete removal of the engine wouldn't seem to be necessary given the working space I see under my truck but I would have to see the headers first. Do you mind telling me how much Borla wants for the set and what it includes? I looked at Banks for a while but the ~$1,700 they want seems like a lot for a toy!
I'm installing the Banks PowerPack on my 2000 V-10 SD.
According to the Banks Manual there is no need to pull the engine or even unbolt the mounts. It dies however require that you remove the front wheels and fender inner liners.
I bought mine and they are great.
I'm told the entire PowerPack will take 10 hours. I'll post my installation results once complete as well as my Dyno numbers when they are done as well.

I had a Banks Powerpack (includes headers) installed, and it isn't true that you have to pull the engine. Period.

I can only comment that the Banks Powerpack installation made a world of difference in my '99 V10, and I'm happy with it, overpriced or not.
Check out the Borla vs. Banks headers, and you may decide that the Banks is better. I think it is.
I put Borla headers on my v10 4x4 you have to remove the spash shlields and tires. It takes all day on a saturday but not that bad of an intallation. They fit good.
I am planning on buying the Borla headers in a few months. Can you tell me what you think of them? Is there an obvious power increase? What about MPG? Thanks a bunch!
LAST EDITED ON 26-Jun-00 AT 09:40 PM (EST)[p]I expected more of an increase in power, there was a noticible increase although, only slightly. The mpg's didnt change. I get 10.5 in town and 15 on the highway. The thing that I did notice was the sound of air rushing through the headers. Not real loud but you could hear it. I put a Flowmaster muffler and dual 3 inch tailpipes on my truck and I do not like the sound of the muffler. It sounds wimpy, like a 6 cylinder. Some of the bolts underneath the header tubes are kind of hard to get to. I am not sure I would go through that again. I would leave it stock. Hope I have helped you. Dan
I've read complaints about the poor exhaust sound going back into late 1998. The V10 just does not sound like a V8. I have the Borla single 3" system and like it for the most part. Is is quiet but not whimpy sounding. It doesn't have the gurgle/rumble that a V8 does. I've never cared for Flowmasters. In my oppinion, Borla, Gibson and Dynomax are the way to go.
The Borla headers should add approx. 30hp and 35tq. That's kinda a low number really. About 10%. Would you estimate that that is about right?
I'm gonna try and run my truck on a dyno before the install to get a baseline.($65 an half hour)I'll then run it after a 1000 miles or so just to see what improvements there are. Now the tough part.... finding $700 to do all this.
LAST EDITED ON 16-Jan-01 AT 01:06 AM (EST)[p]I will bet you a dime to a dollar that it will take you more than 10 hours to install the Power Pack System. I just got done installing the Power Pack System on my 96 460/E4OD and it took 22 hours for R/R. I did install the Trans Command and 4 new Rancho Shocks too. Did you buy the Trans Command unit also.
I'll be curious to know how long it took you. A buddy of mine with a 99 SuperDuty V10 is considering the Banks System also.
The System is Pricy but I'm VERY pleased with the out come. The sound is great and the installation with on with only minor difficulty. Its like night and day. My truck is a different truck now. Effortless uphills and torquey throughout driving range. Couldn't believe the Header Flange's. .675, Super Thick.
I've only had the system on the truck for 4 days now and love it!!!
