I am about to install a set of 351C 4v heads on my 400M. I have hooker headers right now. They are 1 7/8" to 3" collector. Will i need to port these headers to get them to fit the heads? I know that
I need to buy the intake spacer and port match it. But after that should everything bolt back up??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Feb-02 AT 12:05 PM (EST)]Check the bolt hole spacing. I thought (but am not sure) that the bolt holes were spaced wider for the larger ports. I just remember a guy I worked with long ago couldn't get 4v headers to bolt to 2v heads for some reason.
If it's true, or not, let me know so I can refresh my feeble mind.
OK to refresh your memory 2V headers WILL bolt to 4V heads but they won't seal up very good if they have the weld bead type seal, Ground flush they'll work ok but the 1 7/8" tube is to small to port match the the 4V heads. But here's something you could try, Call Stahl Headers at Phone: 717-846-1632 or http://www.stahlheaders.com/ and see if you can get the 4V header flang from them ( I know they have them they sold them to me) Then take a grinder and remove the welds on your current headers and get your old flange plates off and then heat the pipes up and reshape then to the 4V flanges tack weld them together and check fit. if all looks good reweld and your done ..
P.S. With the 4V flang plate there's very little port matching needed .
The easiest option would be to bolt on a set of stock 4v exhaust manifolds... They probably wouldnt be any WORSE than the 2v headers anyhow... Mind you, if you were using something like Parker Racing's 4V exhaust tongues the 2v headers might help the flow out of the ports... I really dont know for sure though
I have a set of ported 351C 2v open chambered heads on my hopped up 400M. I ported the heads to the exhaust gasket size, which is large. When porting the exhaust headers themselves to match the gaskets, I noticed I was cutting right thru the pipes next to the flanges. There just wasn't enought metal. Having a gas welding rig, I added a quarter inch of metal around the outside of the pipes back for several inchs. That gave me enought metal to make smooth transition after cutting the ports to size. Those headers may not be polished chrome beauty, but they work well.
ps: I went thru several sets of headers for my 77 4x4 trying to find a set that would clear the cluch bracket and transfer case. The only route for the drivers side was under the transfer case. I don't know who made these headers but they were made out of very heavy guage pipe and
were well designed and made except for the small and irregular flange ports. After enlarging and cleaning them up with a carbide bur, the headers worked fine and won't burn out any time soon. The headers pipes themselves were 1 7/8" with 3" collectors.
