Around here, the females are either "heifers" or just "cows"... the males are "bulls", and the ex-males are "steers". I would'nt recommend using these terms to refer to human females, since it could definitely lead to becoming a steer.

Up here chic is kind of a word that you may use around friends or sometimes a girl around your age, but not to a complete stranger, as far as her taking offense to it, I'm kinda on the fence on that one. I dont think she had to go and break your knee over it but she has some right to take alittle offense to it.
Boad is ussually used when a bunch of guys are talking about a women or when ya want to be offensive. I have yet to find anyone that takes offense to ma'am or sir, its the norm up here to use ma'am or sir. Hey you aint uncommon for someone whos in love with themselves.
As for myself, if someones trying to get my attention, by all means go ahead and say sir or or whatever, I try not to worry about the small things in life. But if someone is purposly being disrespectful, well thats a different story.
I've coined the term dudette, to go along with dude, works for me.

Chic? Whats wrong with that? I heard a heck of alot worse in my day...I call most of my girl friends "heifer" or hoochie! ...is that bad?
Just .02 from a newbie
I got a boot to the knee the other night for saying "chic".
Well I think there's your problem. Stop dating women that wear combat boots! The more feminine one's will be more tolerant of your way with words. But sorry, they are all prone to violent outbursts, LOL!
Actually it was her boyfriend / fiancee that gave me the boot. She kept calling and we were swamped, but I am new there, and didn't recognize her voice, so I got booted.
I thought it was rather rude, I have really bad knees anyway.
I'm glad my toy doesn't wear boots....'cept when she is snowboarding...
You mean some other dude kicked you? I wouldn't stand for that. "Boot" him back next time. Call him out. Make a scene. There's no reason why someone should kick you under the table unprovoked like that. Make him look like a $&%!@.
And no, I don't think chick is derogatory.
