Is chic derogatory?

got a question for ya'll.

I got a boot to the knee the other night for saying "chic". I've used the term pretty exclusively for a long time, when I want to be polite I say "ma'am" I do that at work and church. I don't tip my hat on any occassion, but I never wear it inside.

need some opinions, I don't wanna get booted again, but i don't know what else to say. a lot of women take offense to being called ma'am.

Part of being wrong is not knowing why you are wrong.

The one that kills me is "ladies". When did this become offensive?
Believe me there are those "women" out there that find this one objectionable. Personally I prefer "split tail". I'm gonna get it now.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the word chic. Then again, it all depends on the use if the word.
IMO think that someone that gets offended by the word chic, is a tad bit uptight.

I actually got sent to a sesitivity training class once for referring to a group of women as "ladies"....

To this day, I continue to believe that it is a respectful term. It has been since the middle ages.... (but we cannot, in todays day and age refer to people in anything that might be thought remotely offensive)

The thing that kills me, is that referring to a group of mixed individuals as "guys" is OK.....

> a lot of women take offense to being called ma'am.

One thing I like about moving to Georgia is people often address people as ma'am and sir when their name is unknown.

I could see where chic might be offensive in an office enviroment. Especially when addressing the boss ;-D

I am in my 40s and I find no offense when an older GA man says something like "Come here boy, I want to talk to you".

Anyone that takes a fit over "chic" I would not bother with until their car/truck broke down and they were hopelessly stuck. Then I would say, could you chics use a hand?
