I have a 2002 F-250 with a 5.4. I want to take off the muffler replace it with a y- pipe and run duals out the back. Is there any possibal damage that could occure to the engine or anything else. And is there some other setup that anyone could suggest I try. Thanks for the help.
You might lose a little bit of low-end torque (or rather shift the powerband higher in the rpms) but other than that there should be no problem. I'd go with dual 2.25" piping so you don't lose too much. It'll be fairly loud but not obnoxious... I kinda like the sound of Flows on the 5.4l....
On my 04 F-150(5.4) I ran true dual straight pipes out the back. I've been impressed with the sound so far, and it's really not to loud. It semed to help a little on performance, but nothing major. As "akford351" mentioned I put 2.25 diameter pipe on it.
First, is it legal to run without a muffler in youre state? Most states mandate it. Do you have visual inspections? They will fail you on the spot if they dont see one. Have you heard straight pipes before? I know I personally like the sound of a muffled exhaust note better than a straight pipe. Is this to purely gain flow? A good high flow muffler should accomplish this too.
I agree with wheelma1....I also like the sound of a muffler (any kind) over straight pipe. You should fork out some extra greenbacks and get some mufflers...you can get some pretty cheap flowmasters on ebay.
I say it depends on the motor... some sound good without mufflers and others don't. For example, I don't like how the 302 or 351 sound without mufflers... to raspy and rough sounding. But the 4.6l and 5.4l actually sound good to me when running stock cats and no mufflers.
I personally don't like the 5.4L on mufflers. It seems to quite. It's really all about what kind of sound you're looking for. Also as mentioned earlier, inspections can be a problem, but where I live it's not.
The reason the 5.4 sounds so quiet is due to that nasty Y pipe and cats they have on them. I would assume its only two cats (two convertors, and two precats). You could probably swap those four out for two high flow units. That would increase the exhaust note substantially.
I run the same setup your talking about...y pipe and no muffs on a 2000 5.4 xlt and i think it sounds great. Its not to loud but when u jump on it,it sounds real good. It was only like 100 bucks, you cant beat that.
