I climbed under the back of my truck for the first time (bought it in December) and noticed that there is no spare tire. In fact, the cable that holds the tire looks like it has been cut. All strands of the cable except one are cut at the exact same point.
Do these get stolen? I think mine probably wasn't there when I bought the truck, but am not sure. Should have looked, but some things you just assume . . . . .
Has anyone replaced the cable? Do I have to repalce the whole lift mechanism, or can I just get hte cable and tire hook?
you have to replace the entire winch assembly and they do get stolen offten i work at a goodyear shop and i bet at least one custmer a week comes in with his spare stolen. its very common at train stations and malls thiefs have the tools to just crack them down and steal them. they are looking for new tires so heres what i did
jack your spare down and get it all dirty in the treads and then when they are looking for a new tire to steal yours will be all dirty and they willl walk away
Check with your Ford dealer before you shell out the money for the tire and carrier. The company I work for had a rash of tire, cable, and carriers fall off while our drivers were running pipelines. Our QFC rep said that even though Ford hasn't issued a recall, dealers are encouraged to bill this AWA (after warranty) back to Ford.
So, do the thieves just roll down the tire and remove it from the holder, or cut the cable? Seems it would be quick enough to roll it down if they have the tools. (it doesn't require a key or anything does it?) My cable is cut.
I was just at Ford on Sat to get my spare tire removed. Not that I could have ever used it considering the 42"'s I'm running, but apparently you need a key like the mag wheel locks to lower the wheel. I never had one or needed it until I needed to make room for the train horns I bought on Friday. Anyway the mechanism is coming out on Wed. I gave the guys at Ford the spare, otherwise I'd have let you make me an offer on both. Let me know if you want the mechanism. I'll let it go cheap as I don;t need it.
i tired to get my spare out and couldnt......after looking down the crank shaft noticed it had a star pattern on it and the crank didnt...anyways I called Ford and they said oh well we dont sell the keys...
Mine was stolen also. I got a replacement at the local junkyard. I also got some wire clamps and made my own thing to hold the tire up because I am cheap.

A pair of bolt cutters will fit between the bed and stock bumper far enought to cut the cable, I know because I cut my own cable when I misplaced the key. I was amazed at how easily and quickly it could be done. I could imagine someone rolling the tire away in a matter of a few seconds with a little expierence, versus probably a minute to lower the tire. I know which method I would use if I were a thief. The only purpose the lock served was getting me to buy a new spare tire carrier when I had to cut the cable.
I have no idea where the tool/key is to access the spare tire. I never saw anything that would resemble a key like a lug lock? Guess I will take a hard look since I know the time I will need to change tires it will be cold and wet outside and I'll be on wet ground looking up under the box trying to figure out what the heck to do...
When I bought mine (used), the key was in a plastic bag by the jack.
I'm going to investigate putting in a piece of pipe around the cable to prevent bolt cutters from getting to the cable. I'll report on what I come up with.
when i bought my truck, i talked the used truck dealer into throwing in a spare b/c one wasnt under the bed. The cable was all messed up. Took it apart and it couldnt be salvaged. Ive since then rigged up a piece of all thread rod and a nut. Holds it in place fine, just takes a while to run it up or down.

After reading this think I will too. Never really thought of someone stilling the spare but if it is so easy I'm sure somebody would buy a set of new tires no questions for a few hundred.
