Originally posted by SMiller Wow, this thing is starting to get confusing, yes I have researched this, it seemed like this guy wanted a bigger maf for more power, he told us of the other things he had done and seemed like he was ready for a bigger maf for some more power, I don't know what he's talking about the sensor, why would you touch it??? The only thing I would ever do is clean it. Trannysmoker why don't you tell us what it is that you want, we seem to be having a problem understanding this.
I think I may have started the whole thing, SMiller.
My bad and I appologize.
Now, since it's evident that I have no idea which MAF system is better, maybe trannysmoker can get an answer.
Originally posted by SMiller Yah a good maf is worth 6-8 rwhp, I would use a Lincoln Navagator 80mm MAF, it's a direct replacement, the ford unit's are much better then the aftermarket ones, you know that you have to have a chip or programmer programmed for the MAF right????? The truck will run like crap without a reburn, talk to Ken maybe he can help you out a little, I would say a bigger MAF will give you twice what your throttle body did.
So can a Superchips programmer handle a larger MAF I just installed a Cobra TB which gave some improvement but think still need to allow more air thru the KN filter..
Ok Boys, I am back... I just keep reading about after market Mass air flow sensors, I have cleaned my just to make sure not oil from the K&N filter is on it. I guess I really do not understand what the darn thing does. I do have a superchip programer
No a superchip programmer can not make the adjustments for a bigger MAF, maybe you could send the unit back to wherever you baught it and they could program it for the bigger MAF, I know that a chip can be programmed for a biggewr MAF, just don't know what all can be done to a programmer. A MAF simple takes a constant reading of the amont of air entering the engine, which then gives the reading to the ecm so that it can make the correct air\fuel mix. You did a good thing by cleaning your stock unit, that should be done every now and then, expecially if you have a K+N. The sensor should never have to be replaced, if it gets dirty it should be very lightly cleaned, I just shot it with some electric contact cleaner, they do make aftermarket MAFs, but the qualty is usially not very good, most people try to find a bigger stock ford MAF to replace there stock unit if they are looking for more power, while you could find a slightly used or order a new MAF from ford for not to much money ($200 tops) it is still going to cost big money to have a chip burned to run it, I believe you would be looking at $300, so your total cost is going to be about $500 for 6-7rwhp, thats a lot of money for not a lot of power. If you look at the power to money ratio you could do a lot better then that on other stuff, just my $0.02
Thats what is important, it cost me a lot of money to figure that out lol It's a shame that all these K+N kits, MAFs, throttle bodys, cat back exhaust, etc. etc. don't USUALLY make any sotp improvement, even a chip doesn't usually make a differnce unless you are running a 93 octane setting, even then most people don't notice a differnce, doesn't meen it won't make a 8rwhp gain on a dyno, just that your 8000lbs truck doesn't feel any quicker, or maybe 8rwhp isn't enough to make your 8000lbs truck quicker. The sad part is that most of the dynos I see where people put a cat back or cold air intake they actually loss a couple hp!!!! There might be a 2hp gain here and there, but the will also be a 3-5 hp loss in other parts, most of the time there won't even be any gain! Now even if a nice sounding exhaust costs me a couple hp I am still going to make my truck sound good, if you want a power differnce you can feel then go with a 93+ octane chip, that should be worth 12rwhp ($212) or with a set of underdrive pullies 7rwhp($160) A lot of chips and programmers come with a money back garranty so I do recemend people at least try them and see if they can feel a differnce, in my mind they are worth it just for the shifts, but you could get the same results for $40 if all you wanted was firmer shifts, unfornataly if you are buying exhaust you are doing it for the sound and nothing else, like many other things, oh and one last thing, people sometimes like to think that there trucks are faster after they put stuff on them, nobody likes to think that they just waisted $300 on something that didn't do anything for there truck lol
