mass air flow sensor

i have a 96' f-150 and i was cleaning out my mass air flow sensor and i noticed a brass plate on the back of it, it seemed to block the air flow. what is this and what is is for?

hmm, i'm trying to recall what it all looks like from when i did the same during the spring. I remember it not looking as i expected to look when i pulled it out
