Well I'm going to start off getting some prices for gears thru Precision and then find a quality diff. shop to set it up. I set up one 3rd memb. in my 76' but I don"t want to attempt the one in my 03' truck. Thanks Busa01 for the GREAT info. it helps. Rich
What don't you want to attempt in your 03. My 03 has had the gear changes and the locker. I also have the Fabtech kit but in the 7.5". What a great kit. Check out my gallery.
Never have set the newer diffs up. Nice truck. Right now you have the 4.10 in w/ the 33" tires. How is it down the highway, say about 70mph, what is you rpm's at?
Gee I never really took notice. The 4.10's with the 33's still have alot of low end grunt and no strain on the motor or tranny. Basically though, like I said, it's like running stock tires with a 3.73 gear ratio, which is perfectly fine on the highway. You would be very happy with the results, trust me. Your gearing is too low right now. One thing you DO have going for you is your 5.4 motor, which is powerful enough to compensate for the low gearing. However, my little 4.2 would have much more difficulty pushing 33's on a 3.55 gear.
i'm sorry, i'm not familiar with the term "3rd member". Please elaborate.
If your talking about the install of the ring and pinion along with the Auburn L/S in the rear, the entire install with parts and labor was 900.00. Worth every penny, except for the Auburn which is a piece of junk. I'm having it replaced with a Detroit Locker very soon.
I was just talking as a whole, the diff. housing w/the guts in it, but you figured it out. Did you use the stock diff. housing and put the new gears in it or is everything aftermarket?
Sorry for all the rattacle ???'s but I appreciate your time and effort, cause I'm seriously thinking of doing this, because of my TT. Just want to get all my eggs in one basket before i do it.
Like I mentioned before, I replaced the ring and pinion with the Mustang Performance 4.10 set and replaced the open differential and carrier with an Auburn limited slip differential and carrier. So basicall everything inside is aftermarket.
You can find all this stuff at www.steeda.com. Your rear is an 8.8 and either a 28 or 31 spline. Steeda will know. If you aren't familiar with Steeda, they are the #1 premier Ford high performance car builders in the nation. They take many Mustangs off of dealers floors and turn them into race cars so the dealer can sell them as brand new cars already modified into race cars. Just coincedance that their main office is 2 blocks from my house, so I have them do all the work I can't do myself on my truck. They ARE the best.
