33's and 3.55 gears?

I'm thinking about replacing the 265/75 16 tires with 285/75 16's. My question is: Will I need to put 3.73 or 4.10 gears or will the 3.55 rear end be ok with the 33 inch tires and a 4.6 V8?

You will have to either change gears or reprogram the ECM for the tire change. If not, it will not shift right and the speedo will be off. 4.10 gears would definately help the 4.6 accelerate better.

I assumed that the computer used rpm's when determining shifting points not miles per hour. Which one is it?

Transmissions usually do not use input rpm to judge shift speed, even elecronically controlled ones.

Most transmissions are setup to shift according to output shaft speed and load.
