96 efi problems

i just bought a 96 f350 with a 5.8l that runs bad.I can smell gas fumes from the exhaust with some black smoke.when i pulled plug wiresseveral cylinders were dead upon farther investigation i found at least 3 plugs were gas fouled and the rest h ad a dry black soot covering them.I replaced plugs ,wires, cap and rotor but it still runs bad so i pulled codes and i came up with 33 and 23(egr failure and tps) i pulled the egr sensor it looked like newand the plunger worked well.i didnt pull the tps cause it looked like i needed to take the throttle body off does anyone know how to test these components? could the problem really be bad injectors causing false code readings like 33 and23.i used a code reader for fords up to 1995, but it seemed to work as well on my 96 anyone know of a good code reader?oh it also r an at higher rpms with the MAP sensor disconnected.and the final thing is when i dissconnected a sensor on the side of the throttle body the engine killed immediatley it was a metal cylinder type sensor what is it called ?

Well, the tps is a fun little sensor I recently had the pleasure of changing. Yes, I pulled the throttle body after realizing the second screw was not gonna be possible while installed. You can check the tps by checking the voltage on the middle wire/green wire. The voltage at idle should be about .96VDC and around 4.9VDC at wide open throttle. You will need some jumper wires/meter between the harness connector and the tps connector/plug. The sensor on the side of the throttle body is the air bypass valve. They cost about $60 bucks and come with the gasket and all. This valve can cause your truck to run bad at idle by making the engine run rich/lean and you won't notice a problem at higher rpms. I would suggest simply unbolting the valve and cleaning it if the engine is running rich as you described. Might fix your problems. Check your timing too. As for the rest of your questions, I'm a little unbiased. Hope this helps.

I would focus on the TPS first. If the computer is sensing a higher throttle position than closed, it will run very rich as well. Also double check fuel pressure and make sure the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator is not punctured and leaking gas into the vacuum line.

On my chebbie, i had low fuel pressure, which made my truck run rich, might be worth checking. Take a vacume test and make sure you do not have a leak.
