I was able to avoid taking my car to the Ford dealer to obtain a second ignition key. After calling around, I found two local locksmiths with Ford OBD II programmers.
I bought the car and the PO only had one ignition key.
After I got one quote, I called another locksmith, who said the only way to get a second key was to go to the dealer. The first locksmith quoted me $110 for one key. The locksmith that I used charges $60 for one key ($40 for using the programmer, and $20 for the transponder key).
I had bought two blank keys off eBay for about $30 with shipping, so he charged me $10 each key to cut them and $40 to program the two keys, or $60.
Problem was the lone locksmith working on this Saturday was unfamiliar with the programmer and customers kept coming in for keys, so it took much longer than it should have.
What the locksmith had was a Hickok Star OBD II scanner (cost about $2000). Unit looked brand new or used maybe two other times. These are marketed as the same unit that the Ford dealerships use. You can search the web and find them like I did.
Hate to be bearer of bad news, but I only paid ford dealer $35 to cut and program my keys (keys were extra). Shop around.
BTW, make sure you have another key programmed so that you have more than two. If you have two keys, you can program the others without the diagnostic programmer.
You need both keys that are already programmed and the new one to program.
1. Turn on ignition with first programmed key. Don't start engine, just turn to "on" position. Watch the "theft" indicator light until it goes out.
2. insert and turn on ingnition with second programmed key in same matter. When theft light goes out, remove key.
3. insert new key to be programmed and trun to on postion. Watch the theft indicator, and when light goes out, turn off the switch and wait 30 seconds.
The key is now programmed. You can repeat procedure for the other keys you want programmed. Just always use the first keys to "access" the system.
I bought two keys off ebay, had my local hardware store cut them for $1 and programed them. Total cost with shipping- $19
I always assumed it was another level of security. If someone got your key (eg - an unscrupulous valet or mechanic) they couldn't program another key since they need two programmed keys.
Its also a $$$ issue with ford- and control- Most Ford dealers charge .5 Hours labor to program and cut keys (30-50$). Of course you have to pay for the keys. Having two keys to program a third keeps someone from getting your single key on your key ring-copying it like mason said
