The only draw back is the 6 is more expensive to build up then a 351 and when all said and done if you were to put the same amount of money into both engines the 351 would come out way ahead. But don't get me wrong I'd love to build my 6 to, but it has 225K and I only wanted to do ad on's like headers, intake, edelbrock 4 barrel, ignition and some head porting. I'm sure I'll be coming up on some major bearing, gasket, and cylinder/piston work here pretty soon though and that makes for a lotta work. I also want some high end speed, the truck tops out at about 75mph on a good day, the engine is shot. As for a 302 and 300, I'd diffently take the 300.

I got about 165,700 miles on my truck now. I got an inline 6 4.9L with 3 on the tree. I don't know what my engine would top off at, but the other day I was going 75 on the freeway and my engine was under 3000rpm. I love my inline 6! Someday though when the engine blows, at that time I will have a car that's economical on gas, so I can drop a 460 engine in my truck then. Can't wait for that day to come, hehe.

But as of right now, over 165k miles and still going with no problems. I bought the truck in august of 2001 from the original owner, had 133k miles on it. For a 1980 that is not much at all. All he ever really used the truck for is pulling a sailboat on the weekends.

Hartattack, are you still there?
I would suggest taking your truck to a known inexpensive mechanic for his opinion.
These motors are known for bad lower end bearings and are not that difficult (or expensive) to change without removing the motor as long as the crank is not damaged.
I have done this a couple times to these 6 cylinders with excellent results!
Remember, we are not trying to run the quarter mile with the truck, just make it last a little longer!
Good luck!
