i have a 86 f150 stepside with a 4.9 300 6 cyl. its rapping and i would like to have it rebuilt. does anyone have an idea what it would cost to rebuild the engine? i'm clueless and hate to junk the truck.
A trip to the local auto store might reveal the name/address of a local "part timer" that does side work. Sometimes these places have bulletin boards where customers may sell used parts...like say an entire engine....then you hire the guy to swap em. I sure would check out some alternatives.
By the way, how many miles on that 300cid? How often did you change oil and filter. You didn't use those cheap Fram filters did ya?
the truck was sittting for 1.5 yrs in neighbors yard and i spend a bunch to pass safety inspection, now oil problem. dont know whether to fix or ditch. but will try cheap fixes first
i hear a lifter noise and sometines i think i hear a rod/bearing rumbl;e when i start to push on pedal or when i let off gas. i dont really know anything about engines
Idea - take an oil sample to a lab and have it analyzed - 'bout $20 - that will tell us what types of metals are in the oil and what parts of the engine may be wearing.
I spent $850 for a short block kit, inspection, machining, and having the head shaved and new valve guides installed. I did take the engine out myself and tore it down. All I did was slap the head and oil pan on and put it back in the truck. It had 3 broken rings and the #6 piston skirt was shattered. It was great, painted the engine compartment and interior a lovely shade of "oily" black
you can get a master rebuild kit from Napa for roughly 450 bucks...the machining will depend on what the machine shop charges, and what you want done...some machine shops will actually do everything from removal to re-installation...don't know what it would cost, but it's something to look into...i like the look of the early 80's step-sides...myself, i'm going to have a 300-6 built up a little bit with some performance mods, just to see what kinda extra power i can get outta the 300, and cuz i like the motor for its long life and easy workability...i'm also gonna be upgrading my tranny and probably my axles/gearing...

I'd personally ditch the 6 and go 351W. I've been tryin my best to blow mine up, so I have a reason to put in a new engine, but she just keeps going at 225K and doesn't take any oil. Now don't get me wrong I still change oil and check fluids and keep up really good maintiance, but once I get behind the wheel I show no mercy. So far the only major prob. I've had was sheering off the timing gears, but I didn't see that as seroius enough to drop in a whole new engine.
