I have just diagnosed my 1998 XLT w/119000 miles with the code P1740, I am zeroing in on this code and have thusfar found out that it's a tranny code, can someone further my aim and give me the exact reason I am seeing this?
I know there is something wrong with the tranny, when the O/D light starts to flash, it shifts real hard into second gear, slips into third and slams into fourth (OD). Is this a dealer/mechanic fix only or would I be able to break out my tools and throw my garage queen out for a weekend and fix it myself.
There is a TSB out for that specific code on 1998 Rangers/Explorers. Article # 99-8-6:
ISSUE
A flashing Overdrive (O/D) light with Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0741 and/or P1740 may be
evident. Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid lot
numbers 769 and 771 may have damaged crimping
points on the pintle. This allows the disc to move,
causing the TCC solenoid to malfunction.
ACTION
Perform normal diagnostics and inspect the TCC
solenoid for lot number 769 or 771, broken crimping
points, movement of the pintle and/or a broken TCC
solenoid bracket. If any of these concerns are
present, replace the TCC solenoid....
I have the same 98 explorer that had the flashing O/D light and the same code. Finally brough it to the trans shop and they replaced a solinoid in the valve body area. Not sure which one, believe it may have been one for shifting of one of the gears(2-3 shift) which caused the tranny to go into its cripple mode. I've heard it may be just a bad "o" ring leaking in the valve body solioid. Anyways, ended up costing $250.00. I'm not sure why it tripped the torque converter code too, but the tech said this was normal.
thanks for all the help. The local ford dealer, the one that I will never return to again, quoted me $1500-3000 to fix this problem. I'd have to replace a solenoid or the entire tranny. They were pushing toward the tranny w/ the 3000 price tag on it.
