So, i have a 74 f250 with a 460. Mostly stock engine with the exception of an Edelbrock I take and carb that was recently installed. Now the truck seems to kick out a massive amount of heat under the hood and is not performing properly. I have done the carb reconstruction, checked all of what I think needs to be checked but because the truck runs waaaay better in the cool evening, was curious if I am vapour locking or something...which leads me to my question; would a carb spacer cure this issue?? Thanks all!
So, ... massive amount of heat under the hood and is not performing properly.
We should try to quantify the amount of heat involved with a temp gauge reading and specify the performance issues. It might also help to know if this 460 came with the truck or was swapped in. In the latter case, what was it originally installed in?
Don't have a temp gun. Performance issues include sputtering and bogging when the truck gets warmed up...meaning that the longer you drive the truck the more it causes grief. This is the original motor, with the exception of the newest mods listed. Thanks
Nope, she ran great before the mods. Long story as to why I did the mods. Yes, fuel line is still routed the same way. Interesting you brought that up though as that is another thing I noticed yesterday while working on it...the robber line coming from the fuel pump line to the carb is seriously hot...so it makes me wonder how good it is to be pumping boiling hot gas into the carb...lol.
Seems strange. Engine temps are higher than before? What is initial timing and is it different then before the new intake install? Kind of just spit balling here.
Also give this a look, scroll past the SBC heads article to the "boil boil toil and trouble" article. Hope something helps.
Thanks blue...I think this answers my carb spacer question now for sure. I will pick one up in the next day or so and let you all know what the outcome is!! Thanks.
Insulating carb spacer is always a common suggestion. I have to ask what air cleaner you are running. Many people slap on an aftermarket open element air cleaner that sucks hot air into the engine. The cooler you can keep the air entering the carb the better.
Hey 85, stock cleaner complete with ugly dog dish...lol. I was debating going with aftermarket open style cleaner to get rid of all the excess junk and clean it up a bit but now I am rethinking this option...
