Now that's your opinion. The 7.3 owned the Cummins in power and reliability. Useable power, anyway. The 6.0 will, too, this fall. The Cummins has been stronger for how long? Again, what good is power at the flywheel when you can't get that power to the wheels?
Cummins is the number one diesel out now, and has been since 1989' (performance and reliability wise anyway).
I don't think so. Since the PSD was introduced in 1994, Ford has sold more than twice as many as Dodge has Cummins. They have had higher power numbers almost every year and 98% of all engines produced are still on the road. I think that puts to rest the idea that the Cummins lasts longer.

1. Please give a source that 98% of all Powerstroke Diesels are still on the road?
2. Does this include all of the 6.0's in the Ford Service Bays?
3. Cummins has been, and Still is the diesel Ford and Gm use as a benchmark I feel Its ARGUABLY the most reliable Diesel on the market.
It was posted on here somewhere else, That an online poll showed that 64% (I thinK) of Powerstroke owners wished they had a Cummins over a powerstroke in their ford Truck..
“The F-Series Super Duty with a Power Stroke Diesel is a well-proven combination: 98.9 percent of all trucks with Power Stroke Diesel engines built since 1994 are still on the road,” Freese added.
this may or may not amount to a hill of beans, but it is still interesting to think about. the 600 cummins has had some issues. true not near as many as the 6.0, but think about it. the 600 is nothing more than a beefed up version of the same 5.9 that dodge has been using for what...14, 15 years now. and they STILL

And It also goes on to say how quite and Great the new 6.0 is with its great "pilot injection" that Ford has since done away with because they just cant seem to get it right.. Sorry dont believe it, If I have numbers from someone OTHER than someone who has a direct interest in the product , then I will believe it.But thanks for the link anyway!
anyway...and they are STILL having problems with it. the 6.0 has only been out for two years. as i said, the 6 has had far more trouble, and being new is no excuse. but the fact that cummins has had 15 years to perfect the engine used in Rams and it is still having issues...i think that says something about cummins reliability.
and who's to say that ford used the cummins as a benchmark? they could just as easily have used the duramax or any other engine or no benchmark at all.
if you want my personal oppinion...all these teir 2 and teir 4 emissions standards are the source of the problem. back in the 60's and 70's when egr and emissions standards first found their way to trucks, it was a nightmare. the same engine produced less power, with less fuel efficiency and getting the bugs worked out took a long time. infact, it might be safe to say they are still workin the bugs out with standards gettin tougher everyday.

Ron
My sources were from International. I don't see the link since they redid their website. What are your sources?!?
One reason Ford outsells everybody in diesel trucks is there reputation goes back longer than dodge or chevy. Dodge with there cummins goes back to 1989 Ford has had diesel in there trucks since 1983. Chevys have had theres longer but there reputation is not too good. So if you want to broaden the thing a bit Ford has the braggin rights to number of diesels on the road still running yet. Its not even close. Its no wonder that Ford sells more than everybody else. Reputation means alot in any business. Ford has it Chevy and dodge don't. Even with the 6.0s problems Ford will still blow away everybody else on diesel sales. People that go to something else will come back. Ford has the best truck period. End of discussion. Look at the sales numbers Ford blows away everybody in numbers. People arnt dumb they know who has the best truck. It has a blue oval on it.

John, I dont have any sources, Thats why I asked you? I tend to Believe a source that doesnt have as much vested interest in the product.. meaning if the numbers came from JD POWER, or POLK, etc...I tend to have more faith in them because they dont have a vested interest to sell the Vehicle in question.
emxmagnum,My opinion, is why use DMAX as a benchmark? Its only been out a few years, and although proving Very reliable, effecient, and powerful and I wouldnt hesitate to buy one.. it doesnt have the reputation behind it yet as the Cummins does.
And as My post said "ARGUABLY" meaning that you dont have to agree, its just my opinion, , just as every other post on here is.
hey....no hard feelings ron....just giving my opinion too. what is ur take on the whole emissions standards thing?
I dont Get hard Feelings over these things, as said its all opinions, and a persons limited experience that is being Spoken.. I am in no way doubting that Ford has a World Class diesel on their hands once the bugs are worked out. I also wont dispute the late model 7.3s were I feel anyway, one of the most reliable motors out there. I however feel that as of RIGHT NOW, the DMAX and Cummins are more reliable.. But as I have said Many times, I know that Ford will get this 6.0 Ironed out and it will be what everyone knows it can be.. ON TOP.
As for the emissions..I think you may have something there! It makes sense, However, manufacturers Come to the plate knowing now days that in 5,10 years the standards could get even tighter, and are probably well on their way to developing motors to EXCEED the current and future Standards..
Doesnt make it any easier though and Im sure it throughs a wrench in things.
