Has anyone tried to fit any of the F150 filters, such as K&N cone that bolts directly to the MAF sensor? Looking at all the options for my 5.0L 94 E150. Does the K&N direct replacement element work that well?
I put a K&N filter element in my van and have noticed NO benefits at all. No increased milage or power. When this one gets dirty, a Motorcraft filter will go back in. If the K&N is overoiled, it can screw up the sensors and cause lots of problems.
I put a K&N in the 91 EFI. But mine doesn't have a MAF sensor, it is a speed density system, so there is nothing in between the air filter and throttle body. I don't think that there was much of a difference in performance. But I cannot be sure. About the same time that I replaced the filter, I had to replace the throttle position sensor. Holy crap, did that make a difference.
I doubt that my rear end dyno would ever notice 10 hp or whatever they claim. Call me crazy, but engine output probably varies by +- 10 hp due to changes in air temp and humidity. The only reason that I got the K&N was that I was changing the filter pretty often (too many dirt roads) and the parts store had a special on the recharging kit (buy a filter, get the kit for free). Otherwise, I would have stuck with the stock style paper filter.

i went out and bought a K&N months after buying my '99 E150 5.4
as much as i wanted to think i noticed a difference, i didn't. oh sure, i would still brag that i was "running a K&N filter charger" but i never saw a difference. i went to clean the filter at about 50,000miles; and it fell apart comming out of it's home. the rubber seal was all but melted away. i had moved since i bought it and was too busy to write a letter to K&N so i just put in a FRAM. i ran into a guy driving a K&N van (service or sales van) a few month ago. told the guy what had happend. he took my name and address and promised to mail me one. i still have not seen it. JMHO

I can't vouch for your truck's benefit, but I can tell you that going with a K&N Cold Air Intake on a late model F-Body definitely improves performance. The farther you place the inlet from the engine heat, the better the gains, too.

I put in a panel type replacement in my 93. Mostly just for the same reason, replaceing the normal one every 3-4k. Did I notice an increase in power? Hard to say. I DID feel an increase when I removed that torpedo shaped plug that was in the air intake.
Trying to rig up some form of a cold air duct to the stock air clearner housing, but have not yet.
I am amazed at how much more responsive the motor is without that torpedo in the intake. I admit is slightly louder at higher throttles, but seems like a poor decision of NVH vs. performance. Not objectionably loud. Thanks a bunch for that tidbit.

Yup I thought the same. Kinda like the noise eaven
do you guys know if i have the torpedo plug on my '99 E150 5.4?
i have changed the air filter but i'm not sure if i'm getting what you guys are talking about.
Don't know about the new ones, but in mine the air box sits right on top of the rad when you open the hood. The drivers side of the box has the hoses that go to the TB on the engine, and on the pass side, there is, I will call it a intake air horn. Just a duct about a foot or so long, that is the air intake for the airbox. Inside that duct is where the plug lives.
i think i know what you're talking about. your filter must be the flat type. mine is round and larger at one end and smaller at the other. thanks for the clarification.
