Leak at Injector pump

Hey guys, have a leak around my injector pump. It has been leaking for a little while but is starting to get worse. I now have a 4-5" puddle under the truck after sitting a couple hours. Is this a hard fix or should I forget it.

Depends whats leaking and wear from. I am going to asuume you are leaking diesel fuel. Firts thing to do is look and see if ya can tell exactly were it is coming form on the injector pump. could be a line loosened up or got a hole in it. could also be o rings/rubber seals going in the pump. Its up to you on yar abiltys but in general if its lines ya can fix them yar self ussually in a few minutes if its ruber seals might be worth having a shop rebuild the ip for you. I say rebuild since usualy when the seals fail somthen inside is about ready to fail to.

check around the neck area of the ip (where it bolts to the front of the engine) there is a bleed hole located on the bottom of the neck.on the shaft that drives the ip there are two seals called umbrella seals, one keeps the engine oil in the engine one keeps the fuel oil in the fuel pump.if one of these seals goes bad that bleed hole is designed to keep from contaminating the pump or engine.this could be your leak but you will have to do some checking to be sure.if that is your leak the ip has to come off.good luck,we are here if you need us!

I am leaking diesel fuel yes, sorry about that, but it is not the lines leaking so that is ruled out. I believe it to be coming from around the front of the pump, cause it is wet here and when I changed the orings on the injectors, I didn't see any wetness in the rear of the pump.

The ip is a rebuilt pump (I believe ford dealer) that only has 20k on it. It was replaced before the motor was rebuilt.

Just a funny note, It figures that as soon as I post this, this morning, it hadn't leaked all night!

That weep hole that rancher is talkin about is a real pita to get to, but you will be able to wrap a clean rag around the neck and hold it up to the bottom of the pump, right at the neck, just behind the mounting flange. I know for a fact that I went thru 3 pumps before I got one that didnt leak. Be sure to use Stanadyne Performance additive in the fuel. This will provide added lubrication to the seals that has been taken out of the "new" fuel when they reduced the sulfur content. Also, if you have to remove the pump, take it out as a huge butterfly and dont take the tower cover off. There are 3 5/16 - 12 pt bolts inside that lil front cover that you take off. Be CAREFUL that you dont drop one inside. You should have the replacement bolts in the return line kit if YOU replaced the return lines last year. If not and you want to use the old bolts, put some blue loc tite on the threads. Good luck and keep us posted.

Still leaking, I was able to check it out somemore this weekend, and this is what I found.

From in front, looking at truck, underneath the ip in the trough, it was really wet, but pump is dry, lines are dry, fittings are dry.

On the front of motor, under the oil fill, there is an oval like plate held on by 2 bolts. One bolt was loose, tightened but still didn't help, but around that same area were it looks like the timing chain cover meets the top of the engine block is a lot of oily diesel fuel. There is no obvious signs of were this is leaking from, and when the motor is running, no fuel seems to be seaping out anywhere. I felt around for the weep hole and couldn't get to it, not enough time for what all I was doing, but will try again.

If it is coming from that weep hole, is this sound like what I will find? Is this about the same signs of one of the seals leaking?

Thanks

From the front of the truck look at the oil fill spout. Behind this the injection pump mounts using a flange and 3 nuts that 9/16 size. Behind that flange is the neck of the pump .. if you stick your finger under there you will find the weep hole. That is probably the area you are getting the leak from. Use a rag to stick under the neck of the pump and you will see the fuel on the rag. This area is a real tought place to get to .. very little clearance under there. Inside this area of the pump there are 2 seals. One direction will keep the motor oil from getting into the pump and the other way will keep the fuel from getting into the motor oil. The weep hole lets the pump from whatever direction the fluid is coming from. You can get your finger under there is you hold it there and have your best friend smack your elbow with a 4 foot 2x4 to drive your finger underneath. GEt back to us if you decide to remove the pump. Dont take the tower cover off with the pump.

I believe I'm experiencing the same thing. Fuel leak and I can't find anything leaking. Whatever is leaking it's only doing it while driving. Nothing leaks when it's running in the driveway. Just getting e big puddle on top of the engine and fuel dripping under the truck.

Check for leaks at the same RPM you are driving with for leaks. Hard starting?

Doesn't seem to be too hard of starting. This time of years she's always a little sluggish getting started. Also don't really drive it a whole lot. I'll warm it up tomorrow and keep the RPS up and see if I can see it leak there.

There's two kinds of hard starting I know about. 1 is I didn't get enough glow plug warming on a cold temp start. 2 is there's air in the system stumbling with hesitation and weak white puffs from the exhaust. Even on not too cold starts.

I mention the 2 type as with fuel leaking usually air gets in.
