IP leak

I replaced my IP and injectors about two weeks ago, also changed the return lines, caps, orings, etc. Now I'm having trouble with cold starting, similiar to a return line leak, but there are no visible leaks on any of the return lines or the injector lines. However, there is fuel on the pan below the injector pump and down the back of the engine.

I'm guessing that the pump is leaking out of the weep hole on the bottom and draining the pump empty when it sits for a while. I need to look at it with a mirror to be sure.

Should I call the shop that sold me the pump and get a new one, or is there an easy fix for this? I started using Howe's fuel additive with the new pump, but the technician told me to use Stanadyne's additive, so I swapped. I had a stalling problem that sort of went away with the additive change. However, the pump had a leak right from install.

Any thoughts?

Guy

No question if it were me.

New pump, leaking fuel - it goes back for warranty replacement....

Assuming you've double checked and verified that all of the lines are tight.

you will be able to check all the lines for leaks by feeling with your fingers around the retaining nuts. the weep hole is a little tougher to reach, use a paper towel and poke it under the weep hole location in the neck of the pump. you may also have a cracked ferrul on one of the fuel lines at the pump.
but if it is a new pump and weeping, i'd take it back.

Bigred....... put some info in a signature as to truck year etc...... There are a couple possible leak places, main seal via the small weep hole underneath or the side advance arm seal, also there are other ports under the IP. Use some cardboard under the IP to identify location.

Sorry, I forgot that my signature won't work until I have posted more.

'93 F350, 4x4, crew cab, long box, 4.10's, 320,000kms (~200,000 miles), soup bowl mod, everything else stock as far as I know.

I will see if I have time to look tonight, otherwise it'll have to wait till tomorrow; and yes, I probably will send the pump back to the shop. Thanks for the input,

Guy

That was too easy!! I poked around under the IP using my mirror with the engine running, and looky there - one of my injector lines was leaking. I could have sworn they were all tight enough (sigh). At least I didn't make a complete idiot of myself and phone the shop about it:-). So, no I won't be sending the pump back after all. (phew!!)

Of course it had to be one of the bottom ones that you have to be a contortionist to reach, but I got it somehow. My engine even smoothed out a touch too!

The only thing I could see - re: hard cold starting - that might have been a problem was the old return line on the filter housing where I had installed a bolt and a clamp; it seemed to be seeping a little, so I repositioned the clamp - hopefully that fixes it.

Thanks for all your input,

Guy

PS. I forgot: my engine's a 7.3L, with a 5-speed

Cool beans! Gotta' love it when the fix turns out to be easy! I installed a clear vinyl line between injector #1 and the fuel filter. That way if any of my return lines starts leaking, I know immediately when I see the bubbles in the line.

big red crew, make sure that the bolt you are using has a smooth shoulder and you aren't clamping the fuel hose onto the threaded part of the bolt. It will leak no matter how tight you get the clamp (threads).

bl311, I think that might have been part of the problem, so I moved the clamp closer to the head of the bolt. I think there was enough shank (smooth part) but maybe I had clamped it too low. We'll see...

Guy

BTW, how come I can't use the advanced reply/post reply button at the bottom of the thread. I get in there and can't type, it's kinda weird. All I can do is the quick reply. Am I the only one?
