F150 4.2 engine good bad!!

I have a 1997 F150 4.2 6 cyl with 85,000 miles that is making a loud knock. The Ford dealership says the motor is gone. No previous indication of a problem, changed oil every 3000-4000 miles. Quoted $3,400 for Ford rebuilt. Any suggestions, is $3,400 a good price?

check jasper engines for a comparison price...and make sure you get a good rebuilt with a waranty.
