Sorry this took so long, only truck I have to drive without time to tear it down. Quick update; Hard to start at 50 degrees, went in and replaced all glow plugs, injectors and did a compression test, compressions read; 1-440, 2-440, 3-400, 4-440, 5-390, 6-390, 7-440, 8-420. Compression didn't seem to bad except for 5 & 6 which are usually the first two to go anyway from dust. Runs good but real slow to start, cranking time excessive before firing up, we'll be checking into HPOP, because found it was leaking off to the amount of 1/2 quart...any ideas where the leaking could be? Thanks for any information available. Still love this truck...especially in the summer.
Did you also replace the o rings on the injectors? Did you also check the valve cover gasket plugs and wiring to glow plugs? My 99 has 370,000 mile on it and I have about the same compression as yours and starts up fine and it has been around 32 degrees in the morning here in NM.
Thanks for the reply, Yes replaced gpr about two weeks ago, thought that might have been the problem, but it wasn't. All the injectors were new and all wiring check out to be ok. It seems like on a cold start up that there is just no fuel, because there is no smoke.(at the first sign of smoke, it starts right up, color is usually light gray or darker). I'm looking into why it's slow to start. I've checked out how the injector actually fires, which requires the HPOP to produce at least 5 to 6 hundred pounds of pressure at cranking speed, but I think my problem is the pump runs out of oil, therefore longer cranking time to build it back up. I've heard there is a checkball valve but have not check it out yet, because once it starts it restarts fine.
If your HPOP is draining down you may have a problem with the anti-back flow check valve. I think that is the correct name of the part. There is an o-ring, ball and seat. This keeps oil in the reservoir when the engine is off.
I jotted down these #'s from a past posting in case I needed them. Could be what you are looking for. Check valve parts.

Just went through this on my 95 psd. The diesel shop I went to said it could be one of three things, either the check valve on the hpop, the o ring is cut,or there is something obstructing the check valve.Mine ended up being a piece of crud thatwas nothing serious. You also have to be careful not to over crank the engine, becauseyou can deplete the oil in the hpop and it will have to be manually primed before the engine will fire again. They also told me that it was a must to keep the oil clean and to use a good brand of oil.If you have to go into the hpop it is about a three hour job.
Thanks for the info, just were is this valve located? I think it is on the driver side of the HPOP but not for sure. This fourm is great, has help me out a lot,
F350Bandit before you try to start your truck in the morning pull the inspection plug on the oil reservoir and see if your oil level is about 1/2" from the top. If it is not manually fill it and see if it will start right away.
Correct name is anti-drainback check ball. It is located in the left ( drivers side ) head towards the front, valley side. I'm looking at a picture of it in the manual but it doesn't pinpoint it any more than that. Gona try to email you some pics from the manual.

Oops. Guess I won't. Your email address is not available.
The anti drain back check ball is located at the front of the engine on the drivers side in the bottom of the valley. You cansee it right next to the hpop.
