I have a friend that broke off a peice of his 429 engine block...it is located at the passenger side bottom bellhousing to block bolt hole. The threaded hole itself is not broken but it did break a piece about 2 inches clean off of the block...my question is how can we repair this? Welding, Brazing?
Most likely arc welding with nickel will produce the best results for that type of repair. Some preheat and post stress relief would be in order. Its not really a DIY repair if you want it done right. Warm preheat, not hot and small welds depending on thickness with peening. I like to run nickel on AC to reduce arc blow. Current settings are different than steel. The tendency is to run too hot. The electrodes tend to operate similar to low hydrogen. If this is a valuable block you might get some pro help.
I have access to both arc and mig welders...also have torches and i know how to use all...i have never welded on something like cast iron or engine blocks though.
