Hey Guys, Need some help. I have a 2000 psd, 100,000 miles, automatic transmission, in good condition and well maintained. The problem is, approx. 2 days ago I noticed a tap- tap- tap noise at low idle. Sounds like lifter tap that is often heard on old chevy gas engines? the noise typically fades at 1500 rpm, the resumes once normal idle speed is resumed. no change under acceleration "it goes away". Also it isnt a constant noise sometimes its there other times it isnt. Just wondering any of you guys experienced the same?. Could it be a rod or main bearing? Any help with this would appreciated.
I get the same thing once in a while with really crappy diesel. Drain the water from the fuel bowl, and add some Diesel Kleen. Also, how long since last oil change?
Bossman, last olil change was 4500 miles ago. Will try the diesel kleen. Always try to purchase my fuel from the same source, maybe a delivery of substandard fuel?
I'd pour the diesel kleen directly into the fuel filter after dumping what is currently in the fuel bowl. This may help and you can check the fuel filter at the same time. If the ticking goes away, you probably had bad or low cetane fuel. If not, back to the drawing board and try to isolate the tick as to which side and whether it is fore or aft on the engine. Not sure on our diesels but the aft lifters of my old gassers are more prone to tapping/ticking then the front due to the heat back there.
Have the exact same problem. Had it checked out by an expert in powerstrokes, he said that the #4 and #5 cylenders are know for getting hot. Ford tried to fix it in some trucks by replacing the injectors with what they called " long lead injector ". What that was supposed to do is inject more fuel in those cylenders for a longer time than the unaffected cylenders. Unfortunatly the sound has been herd some times even after the "fix". You also have to reprogram you computer for the " L.L. injectors" so that it knows to spray more fuel. You can pull the valve cover off to see if yours already has the L.L. injectors installed.
C.M.P told me that the cylender is getting hot and when the fuel is injected into the cylender it bounces around like dropping water on a hot iron. Therefor that is the sound " TAC, TAC, TAC". Keep an eye out for it. As mine too has started doing it at the magic 100,000 mile mark. I am now over 127,000 mile mark.
P.S. I would still have it checked out. I was told it is more of an annoyance than damaging the engine.
