ok guys i have searched and havent come up with any help yet so im asking.
i have a 1998 explorer xlt, i've had it for about a year and a month after i bought it the turn signal relay started making a noise. it sounds like a lie detecter, some times it is just a light tick, tic-tic, but then sometimes it just make a screeching buzzzzzzzzzzz. it dosent do it once the turn signal is being used only in the rest position. i have changed the relay twice and no luck.
It is likely your multi-function switch causing the problem. The switch is located in the steering column and operates the turn signals, flashers, high beams, windshield wipers and washers. Before replacing try spraying some contact cleaner in the flasher switch on top of the steering column while pushing the flasher button a number of times. This worked for me. If you need to replace the switch be sure to disconnect the battery. You don't want the air bag to take your head off. IIRC, the switch is about $55 from the dealer.
Hmmm. My first time posting on here, but I have noticed something about my turn signal as well. I have a 2000 Sport, and it has happened a few times that when I'm stopped at a stop light and have my left turn signal on for a few seconds it will stop flashing and clicking and the little left arrow on the dash just stays lit up. About this point a few wisps of smoke will emerge from my steering column, so I turn off the signal. It works just fine again the next time I need it. This doesn't seem to happen if the wheels are turned slightly to the left. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen??
